Wal-Mart Strikes Again.... |
I was listening to the radio news this morning as I decided whether or not to get out of bed, and apparently City Council approved the building of a Wal-Mart in that area south of Clarence Ave. and Circle Drive, near that new residential development Stone-something....so anyway, City Council also approved the building of an interchange at Circle Drive and Clarence Avenue which would allow for better traffic flow into that area. The total cost of the project is estimated to be about $15 million; the retail developer whose name I can't remember, but for all intents and purposes, is Wal-Mart, is putting $2.8 million dollars into the project. Do the math: that's about 5% of total costs.
The City has to cover the remainder of construction costs. What they intend to do is get the funds from the learning portion of property tax, so they're sending a proposal to the Department of Learning to get the dough. So what's the teacher who can't get textbooks gonna say? 'Sorry kids, we'll have to use the 1970's edition of our Canadian history text again this year- Joe Blow had to get out to Wal-Mart five minutes faster to buy cheap running shoes.'
Gaaaad, what's the world coming to? |

It's a vicious circle...poor education (due to misappropriation of funds from Learning) = crappy jobs (Wal-Mart) = money needed to build a new Wal-Mart (to employ +/or service those who have a crappy education) = poor education, and on and on and on... The cycle, she never ends!!! LOL>.<

...sorry, have to add a clarifier - I am in no way saying that those who shop at, or are employed by Wal-Mart, have a poor education necessarily...

i used to work in the shoe department and it sucked yo. but i do shop there now, regardless, because i am a poor student and would rather save my money for the important things. for instance, alcohol, POP, wool, etc. ;)
